Adventure Time Backpack Sew Along: Day Five – Creating the Lining

Adventure Time Backpack Sew Along - Andrie Designs

Welcome to day five of the Adventure Time Backpack Sew Along. We have completed our outer bag and can finally see a light at the end of the tunnel (Hooray!!!). Today we will be assembling the lining. It’s a relatively simple task and uses many of the techniques you have already encountered.

To recap on where we at, visit the previous blog posts:

Today we will be looking at:

  • Creating your inner zipper pocket (pages 17 & 18)
  • Creating your inner slip pocket – closure tab (page 18)
  • Creating your inner slip pocket (pages 18 & 19)
  • Creating your lining gusset (page 19)
  • Assembling your lining (page 20)

You will need:

  • The Adventure Time Backpack pattern
  • Pattern pieces:
    • Inner zipper pocket
    • Back and middle panels – lining
    • Closure tab
    • Inner slip pocket
    • Inner slip pocket contrast strip
    • Back zipper gusset lining
    • Back gusset – lining end
    • Base – lining
  • Dress zipper
  • Magnetic snap and stabiliser
  • Fabric pen, pencil or chalk
  • Sewing tools of your choice (pins, clips, etc.).

As usual, we start with a nice simple task of creating an internal zip pocket. This uses the same technique as the front zipper pocket we looked at on Day Two. You will notice in the photos of today’s post that I have left this pocket out of my sample bag. That’s the thing I really love about this pattern. You can add and remove components making each and every bag unique.

Next we create the closure tab with the male half of the magnetic snap (That’s the half with the raised bit in the middle). Remember to fuse some scrap stabiliser to the wrong side of the fabric, underneath where the snap will be placed. If you need some additional guidance with installing the magnetic snap, download the Install a Magnetic Snap Quick Reference Sheet.

When sewing the closure tab pieces together, I used a smaller than normal stitch length. I find it gives me a nicer curve along the bottom, and it adds strength against my roughness when turning the tab right side out (I am definitely not a delicate flower when it comes to this).

The next task is to create the inner slip pocket. Here are a few hints that will hopefully stop you making the same mistakes I almost did:

  • The closure tab sits over the top of the inner slip pocket. This means the magnetic snap will be positioned on the outer side of the slip pocket.
  • Do not install the magnetic snap until after you have attached your contrast strip. While it’s not the end of the world if you do, it definitely is easier to stitch the contrast strip without the snap in place.
  • The prongs of the magnetic snap should sit in between the two inner slip pocket pieces, as shown in the photo below. Do not push them through both pieces.

Baste both the inner slip pocket and the closure tab to the back lining panel. Ensure the closure tab lies on top of the slip pocket with the magnetic snap halves facing each other. Pop this to one side and move on to the lining gusset.

I’ll pause here for a wee moment of honesty. I am rubbish at folding and pressing long strips of fabric without them turning out all wibbly wobbly (and timey wimey), so here’s a little trick I used for step 57 on page 19.

Place the two gusset pieces right sides together and, with a long stitch, baste the long edge with a 1/2” seam allowance. Press the seam open and topstitch each seam as per the pattern.

Unpick the basting stitches…

…and you have two nice, neat (and straight) gusset inner edges.

Add the gusset ends, as per the pattern. The remaining steps to complete the lining are exactly the same as when we assembled the outer bag in Day Four. First stitch the front and back panels to the gusset, then attach the base. As with the outer bag, don’t be afraid to sew slowly and poke or prod the lining to help it feed comfortably through your machine.

I was a little careless with one of my corners, as you can see here. I didn’t bother doing anything about though, as it’s the inside corner of the lining and ain’t nobody gonna see that.

There you have it. One complete backpack lining (minus the inner zipper pocket on this sample).

All we need to do now is join the lining to the outer bag. We will tackle that on Friday, 15 July 2016, the last day of our Adventure Time Backpack Sew Along.

Remember to post any questions, photos, hints and tips, or encouragement in the Andrie Designs Facebook group.

Until Friday.
