We’re going to use the drop-in method for attaching the lining to the outer bag. This is not a difficult technique, but may be new to you so be sure to read the instructions carefully.

Start with the bags wrong side out, the back panel of the lining against the back panel of the outer bag.

Stitch these together within the seam allowance. It is important that you stay within the seam allowance or you may end up sewing over your beautiful piping and changing the shape of your bag. I stitch from the gusset seam on one side over to the gusset seam on the other (the length of the outer gusset zipper).

Turn the bag the right way out, with the lining sitting inside the outer as if it were a complete bag. Try and sit the lining inside as neatly as possible, ensuring the gusset seams are aligned.

Fold the gusset of the outer bag back so you can see the seam allowance. Stitch the front panels together within the seam allowance, as you did with the back panels. You may find it difficult to stitch the entire gusset length, so just stitch as far as you can.

Poke and prod the lining so that it is sitting neatly within the outer bag. You don’t want to see any raw edges or other ickiness. I like to clip it in place just so I can be sure it’s sitting correctly.

Stitch along the existing topstitching to secure the lining to the outer bag. If you’re lucky/talented, you will be able to do this in a single step down one side of the zip, across the gusset, up the other side of the zip, and across the remaining gusset. If you are finding it difficult to do this in one step, stitch as far along one side as you can, then the other side, and finish by hand-sewing the gussets to ensure there are no gaps in the lining.

Finally, stitch a second row along the zipper tape to ensure the lining is secure and out of the way of the zip. Again, just stitch as far along as you can if you’re having trouble stitching along the entire length of the zip.

You are now the proud owner of your very own perfectly awesome Adventure Time Backpack.

Why does the pattern say to turn the outer bag right side out, but then a few steps later, you turn it wrong side out again? I don’t see instructions to top stich the outer bag, so I’m not sure how far from the zipper to sew the lining to the outer. I’m so close to finished, thank you for the photos and tips in this tutorial!
