Introducing Maker Maker by Andover Fabrics: Part 2

Introducing Maker Maker by Andover Fabrics - two pretty poppets

If you read my last blog post (here), you will have seen the gorgeous Maker Maker range by Sarah Golden, from Andover Fabrics, is out and just divine… Like seriously, it really is…!

As well as making a Cleo Everyday Wallet, Fiona from 2 Green Zebras also asked me if I’d be interested in making a baby bag out of this range, for her to give to a very special friend who had recently become a new mum.

Immediately I said YES! as I knew this would be a great chance to not only create something amazing and totally on-trend, but also to have a bit of fun with my Stand Up & Tote Notice pattern and throw a few hacks in as well!

After a bit of pondering, I settled on the following prints, deciding to follow the ‘less is more’ principle –

And of course I simply HAD to throw in some gorgeous handbag hardware as well for the cross body strap I planned on adding! These beauties are from the amazing Kylie at Betty Box Pleat.

Not familiar with the Stand Up & Tote Notice tote bag pattern? Not a problem! You can find it here!

To begin with, I made the cross body strap. I decided to make it 1 1/2″ (3.8cm) wide so it would be comfortable when worn, as well as a reliable size when hooking the bag over the handle of a pram.

I decided that the connectors for the cross body strap needed to be a bit of a feature, so made the connectors separately and attached them over the side seams of the bag once the outer was fully constructed (but BEFORE I attached the lining).

For the lining, I followed the same principle as for the outer pockets, and made large slip pockets for the inside as well. I stitched them vertically (as you do for the outer pockets), to create smaller pockets at each side.

These smaller pockets (four in total) will be perfect for things like bottles, nappy rash cream/powder, nappy sacks, bibs etc. The larger main slip pockets (two in total) will be perfect for things like nappies, change of clothes, mum’s wallet etc.

And of course you have the main space in the middle of the lining for everything else one needs to carry when they have a new baby!

I also added two large zipper pockets in the lining, behind the slip pockets, which will be great for storing less-frequently-used-but-need-to-be-lugged-everywhere items (LOL 🙂 ).

The result is one gorgeous bag that I think, looks absolutely stunning!!!

I can’t wait to hear what Fiona and her special friend think of the bag!!! For those interested, Maker Maker is out now! Woohoo!!! It really is a great range, both in design and feel. I’m confident the fabrics will be fairly hard wearing when used for bags, as well as give your next bag that professional, polished look!
