Layla Coin Pouch

Layla Coin Pouch - Andrie Designs

Hi bag makers! Can you believe it? We have yet another pattern hack for the Layla Essentials Purse! This one has been requested by numerous Bag of the Month Club members so we thought we would share how to add a simple coin pouch to the middle of your purse! Make sure you read all the way through this one so you catch all the tips and tricks! Let’s go!

For this version of the Layla Essentials Purse, you will need the following pieces:

  • Your Main-Outer piece with the magnetic snap attached (No zipper pocket added!)
  • Flap complete but NOT sewn on yet!
  • Your Card Slots front and back completed
  • Notes Pocket – Outer & Lining pieces cut and ready to go
  • 2 Outer fabric pieces for the coin pouch cut at 3 1/2″ wide by 5 3/4″ tall (9cm wide by 15cm tall)
  • 2 Light/Medium weight interfacing pieces for the coin pouch cut at 3 1/2″ wide by 5 3/4″ tall (9cm wide by 15cm tall)
  • 2 lining pieces for the coin pouch cut at 3 1/4″ wide by 5 3/4″ tall (8.5cm wide by 15cm tall)
  • 1 piece for the coin pouch zipper tab cut at 2″ by 1 1/2″ (5cm by 4cm)
  • 2 Centre Side Panels cut with interfacing fused
  • 6″ zipper we will be trimming down!

Before we do anything, we need to trim the corners of the lining of the coin pouch. It will be sewn at an angle so you need to accommodate this. Measure 1/4″ in and 1/4″ up (0.6cm in and 0.6cm up) to create a triangle and cut this off. This does not need to be accurate as it will be hidden inside later!

To prepare the outer of the coin pouch, we will be adding the Centre Side Panels to one side. Take note that you need them on opposite sides if you are using a directional fabric like I am! Sew them down with a 1/2″ (1.3cm) seam allowance (1). Trim to 1/4″ (0.6cm) (2) and press the seam towards the Centre Side Panels (3). Do not topstitch yet!

Take your zipper end and fold it in half with the wrong sides together, matching short sides (1). Press. Open it out and fold each side into the middle and press (like double fold bias tape) (2). Fold in half and press again (3).

Take your zipper and place it right side down on your work surface. Fold one end of the zipper tape out 90° angle. Glue in place (1). Repeat for the remaining end of the zipper tape, folding it out 90° in the opposite direction and glue in place (2).

Once you have the end of your zipper folded, measure from the point of the fold, down 5 inches (12.8cm) (1). Cut at this mark (2). We won’t be using the metal zipper end for this one because it will make your opening on the coin pouch even smaller!

Place your zipper tab right along the end that you just cut (1). Topstitch along the edge with a 1/8″ (0.3cm) seam allowance (2). Trim off the excess so it is the same width as the zipper (3).

Before we sew the zipper on, we need to prepare where it will go on the outer coin pouch pieces. Measure UP from the bottom edge 1/2″ (1.3cm). Make sure it is the bottom if you are using directional fabric!

Match one edge of the zipper tape with the corresponding raw edge of the outer piece (1). The Zipper Tab should be sitting at, not on, the 1/2″ (1.3cm) spot we marked (2). Clip the zipper in place. Stitch to attach using a 1/8” (0.3cm) seam allowance (3).

Now that the zipper is in place, we can sew on the lining side. Clip the lining in place (1) but flip it over and sew on the side WITH interfacing (2). If you find that you get some stretching, this will help prevent that! Sew down using your zipper foot (3).

*Hot tip – make sure your zipper foot isn’t sitting too close to the zipper teeth or you will struggle to open and close the zipper!*

Before we flip things over to topstitch, trim that excess zipper tape that is exposed from when we folded it.

Press all fabrics away from the zipper and topstitch with a 1/8″ (0.3cm) seam allowance.

Repeat on the other side! You will now have a piece that I call a “butterfly”! Before moving to the next step, OPEN your zipper almost all the way!!!

Fold your coin pouch so that the right sides of the outer fabric are meeting and the right sides of the lining are together as well. You want the zipper seam to be pointing towards the lining (1 & 2). Make sure you line up the seam where the center side panels are added to the outer as well. Pin or clip everything in place as needed (3).

Draw on your 1/2″ (1.3cm) seam allowance (1). There are a lot of funny angles so this ensures that your seam is accurate (2). In the 3rd photo, you can see that the zipper tab will be right up next to the seam allowance but will NOT be stitched! Push it out of the way if need so you don’t catch it! (3)

Trim your seam allowance and clip the inner corners and trim outer corners of the exterior pieces (the one WITH interfacing) (1). Once you have that done, trim the lining seam allowance to 1/8″ so that it sits a little snugger inside! (2) If you find that the ends of the zipper are not sitting flat, trim that seam allowance a little more too and it will help reduce some bulk.

Turn the pouch and press, first just the exterior on its own to make the angles crisp (1), then again with the lining pushed in (2).

Before we close up the turning holes, make sure that the lining, exterior and centre side panel raw edges are all meeting up inside. This ensures that they are caught for the topstitching!

Topstitch ONLY the centre side panel piece all the way around with a 1/8″ (0.3cm) seam allowance. This closes up the turning hole for us and gives a completed look!

Once that is done, you can complete the inside of your Layla Esnetials Purse from Step 11 in the pattern on, replacing the coin pouch for the centre card slots! Once you get to Step 24, STOP as there is a small adjustment!

To accommodate the slightly thicker coin pouch, we need to move the flap up a little! We can do this because we have not added the zipper pocket to the back! Centre the flap vertically and ensure the stitching line you drew earlier in Step 21 of the pattern is 2” (5cm) IN from the short raw edge of the main outer panel (1). Stitch to attach the flap to the main outer panel by stitching twice over the line you drew in Step 21, and once around the curved end of the flap as well, directly over the existing topstitching (2).

Complete the rest of the wallet as per the pattern BUT you will need to follow the steps in the Layla Made Easy pattern hack post for your turning/birthing hole as you do not have the zipper pocket on the exterior!

Give everything one final press and step back and admire your fancy new Layla Essentials Purse with a middle coin pouch!

The beauty of the coin pouch inside is that you can stash away way more coins and it’s a larger opening to get into! Plus it gives you a chance to play with a fun feature fabric inside!

Moving that flap just a little bit more makes it more accommodating for storing the endless amount of coins we all seem to stash away!
