Meet the Maker: Pink Elefant Creations - Andrie Designs

With a background in hairdressing it’s no surprise that our Meet the Maker guest today brings a certain unique funkiness to the bag making world. Her great use of colour never fails to brighten my Facebook news feed. I introduce to you the lovely Tara, from Pink Elefant Creations.

Tell us a little about yourself.

I’m a stay at home Mum to a cheeky 4 year old girl and wife of a FIFO worker (fly in fly out), living in beautiful Safety Bay, Western Australia.

I’m a hairdresser by trade but stopped when I had my daughter. We have 2 dogs: a Red Heeler (Dori) and a mixed breed fluff ball (Pepsi). There are also 3 fish in the house (Goldy, Barry and Sucky).

I’m a bit of a hermit these days, lol. Leave the house for food and sewing supplies. Oh, and to do the airport run, haha!

How long have you been making bags to sell and how did you get started?

I’ve been sewing on and off most of my life, but got really into it after I had my daughter. Started off with clothes for her and within 12 months was upgrading my basic machine for one with more options.

Bags and wallets I got into about 2.5 years ago when I discovered the NCW (Necessary Clutch Wallet from Emmaline Bags) and a boho bag pattern.

I started my business about 2 years ago and started selling wallets and kids clothes. I wanted to start testing patterns so joined a group on Facebook that was just for tester calls. I tested a few clothing patterns and then applied to be a tester for Lisa with the Gather Me Up Clutch and have been happily addicted to testing her patterns ever since. It’s helped me discover that I much prefer testing over doing custom orders, LOL!

What are you working on right now?

Right now I have a Swoon India cut ready to sew. It’s a selfish sew for me to take on holidays this weekend 🙂

What’s your favourite part of making bags?

I love the process of it. Picking different fabrics and transforming them into beautiful pieces of artwork. The freedom of being able to add or remove options and really personalise the bag or wallet.

I love the feeling of finishing a bag and the satisfaction it brings 🙂 It’s kinda like an addiction…a good one.

And your least favourite…?

The ironing. lol. I didn’t own an iron until I started sewing more seriously.

Do you have a favourite tool or notion that, in your eyes, is an absolute life saver when it comes to making bags?

My rotary cutter. I love how it makes cutting so much quicker. Oh, and my vintage machine. lol. My poor Janome struggles with the thickness of some of the bags.

Thanks, Tara, for giving us this great look inside your crafty world.
