We’re back! Our first Meet the Maker of 2018 is the creative Rosemarie of Rosie Blooms! Not only does she take basic patterns to a whole new level, but she is a friendly and supportive maker in the bag community. Give a warm welcome to Rosemarie and get to know her a little bit more!

Tell us a little about yourself.

Well I am actually quite a boring person really and enjoy my own company, I know that it sounds strange and weird but I like it like that way. Even though I have been married for 26 years this year and very happily indeed, I enjoy the peace and quiet when no one is around so I can just sew.

I am a mother of 4 grown adults and have 3 beautiful grandchildren whom I love adore each and every one of them and they are the best thing in my life, along with my hubby of course. I just live in a normal suburb about 30 minutes out of the capital city of Perth in Western Australia and love it, far enough without being too far.

How long have you been making bags and how did you get started?

I think from memory I have been making bags for about 3 or 4 years now. I just started out doing really easy ones, simple designs nothing over the top, but decided I wanted to make something a bit more challenging. My very first real bag as I call it, was Andrie Designs’ Goin’ Uptown Tote. It took me awhile to do but I was very happy with the end result, and to this day the lady that is was for still uses it as her every day bag.

What are you working on right now?

Now that would be letting the cat out of the bag if I tell, but all I will say is that it is a beautiful pattern and well worth the wait. But also I have been trying to do a selfish sew for me – I have a Roll With It Tote, a Cleo Everyday Wallet, and a Little Freehand Pack that I have been trying to finish off these past few weeks and I never seem to have the time to finish, so hopefully I will get to them soon.

What do you enjoy the most about bag making?

Choosing the colours, the zips and the hardware and watching them all come together and then watching how my customers eyes light up when they see their creation, it just makes it all worth while.

What is your favourite sewing notion and tool that you cannot live without?

My favourite sewing notion is my Tula pink scissors, snips and seam ripper, what’s not to love about them. They are just so pretty and sharp I adore them and wouldn’t be with out them. As for a tool – my rivet press and hole punch. Without them my rivets look like they have been flattened with an old boot! Best money I have ever spent was getting one of them.

Do you have a favourite fabric designer or style?

Yes, I adore Tula Pink I love her vibrant colours and style a bit quirky sometimes but they work for me. I am not fussed really on style as when I want to buy fabric if I like it I will buy it and sometimes that is not a good thing, haha. My daughter told me how much fabric do you need, I said to her how long is a piece of string.

Do you have any tips for someone new to bag making?

Just do as best as you can, ask for help if you’re not sure on how to do something. Never underestimate what you can do and believe in yourself as we are our own worst critics. Don’t ever let some tell you just because it’s handmade it should be cheaper. They don’t realise how much time, effort and love actually goes into making that special piece of art you are creating. Last of all, join as many groups as possible as they say, two heads are better than one.

What has been your proudest creative moment?

I made a Creative’s Tote, Reusable Grocery Bag and the Carry All Flexi Clutch for my mum. I had the fabric especially printed from Spoonflower with her little dog on his name is Ludo. As Ludo is my mum’s constant companion since the passing of my dad nearly 7 years ago, it was such a great honour and pleasure to make it for her birthday. Watching the tears of joy when she opened the present made it totally worthwhile. My mum uses her bag every day and gets lots of compliments on it.
