Cleo Everyday Wallet

To create this quilty Cleo Everyday Wallet, Crystal used prints from the newly released Sun Print 2017 collection.

Crystal recommends starching the fabrics before cutting. Say says “it helps cutting accuracy and makes handling small strips more manageable”. What a great tip!

Quilt Me A Bag Series - Andrie Designs

She used strip piecing for several parts of the wallet as follows –

  • Flap
  • Back Outer Panel
  • Front Outer Panel (Bottom)

To start, Crystal cut strips out and laid them down in the order she wished to assemble them in. She then pinned them right sides together in pairs ready to stitch.

Woohoo! Go production line stitching!

Crystal’s top tip for using strip piecing is to shorten your stitch length to around 1.8mm or 2.0mm. “This ensures the stitches stay put when cutting out pattern pieces and it helps the strip panel to lie flat”.

Oh my, this is going to look AMAZING!!!

She chose NOT to use any piecing on the following parts of the wallet –

  • Interior pieces
  • Front Outer Panel (Top)

I asked Crystal why she chose not to piece the front outer panel top piece and she explained quite simply that by leaving it as a single cut of fabric, and using a completely contrasting print, it really helps the beautiful rainbow strips POP! I think I have to agree there – it looks fantastic!

A few simple steps later and here is her finished Cleo Everyday Wallet! Gorgeous!

  1. Terrie Blackett says:

I love the strip quilting on this Cleo, but my favourite is the quilt as you go as I have used it before and it’s great for using up scraps and makes everything you make unique x

  2. Claire Schutz says:

I find the strip quilting interesting way to show off the fabric. It also seems much easier to assemble and show off the colors. Great item.

  3. Pamela Keegan says:

I have to say I love the quilt as you go, as it gives so much texture and interest. Would be good to use up bits of fabric scraps.

  4. Mandy Pienaar says:

Love the quilt as you go. Have never used this method so was a great easy small project to learn on and I certainly loved the experience.

  5. Katrina Zadow says:

I love the QAYG method, but I really love the strip piecing on CLEO. It allows you to fit so many different fabrics on one item ?

  6. Samina says:

Love both the QAYG and the strip techniques. Would love to try those. Already have one Cleo wallet. But will be sure to try it this way. Thanx everyone for the wonderful patterns and techniques.

  7. Lynn Taylor says:

Strip piecing certainly gives the advantage of using up some of those bright and beautiful scraps on hand, but I do love the speed of quilt-as-you-go as well…

  8. Jacqui Emmerton says:

I just love both the wallet and bag, the colours are just beautiful when I look at them they make me feel happy. I have made the cleo wallet twice now, I think I just might have to make another one with the bag as a patchwork couple. ?

  9. Lawanda Platero says:

I like both techniques. I’ll say I like the simplicity of the strips for the wallet more. I need to get quilting!

  10. Jan says:

I have had experience with both methods. In this case I would use strip piecing on the Roll With It Tote and then use the scraps to do quilt as you go on the Cleo Everyday Wallet.

  11. Susan says:

Why can’t I have both. I do like them bothe and they compleme t each other so well -not too matchy matchy. If pushed I would go strip piecing, but will probably use it as a small component.

  12. Marion says:

Love the wallet pattern. I like to strip piece but I prefer the look of the quilt as you go method. You can use varying sizes of fabric with the quilt as you go. Well done. Wallet looks fab.

  13. Jessica Kroger says:

I like the strip piecing better because of the uniformity of it. I like the lines created by strip piecing over the different sizes of the quilt as you go. I think for me strips will work better than many different sized pieces.

  14. Melinda Meehan says:

I enjoy strip piecing but prefer the look of quilt as you go. It gives beautiful texture and it’s a great way to use up those precious scraps. Such a gorgeous set..Alison Glass fabrics make me happy!

  15. Karen P says:

I can’t sew a long at the moment because of machine issues but I am looking forward to creating these beautiful projects in a few months time. This wallet is so very very classy! I’m thinking that the multiple lengths of Liberty Lawn I have hoarded over the years will be perfect for some of the beautiful bags and wallets. Thank you so much for sharing how and the tips and techniques too, sending greetings from the UK Karen x

  16. Kirrilee says:

Strip piecing for sure! I love the look of the stripes and the challenge of accurately matching it all up! The Cleo Wallet looks stunning using this method! I admire your accuracy Crystal and love your tip about starch ?

    • Crystal Harrison says:

Thank you, Kirrilee!! I enjoy the process of strip piecing.
Starch is my friend. Lol! I use it for all my projects 🙂

  17. Tammy says:

I love the wallet and the hand bag with the strip piecing. I love the look. I would like to ask what size strips she started with for the wallet.
Thanks and good work. Can’t wait to see more.

    • Crystal Harrison says:

      Hi Tammy:)
I cut the strips 1.5″W x 11″L for the main exterior top/bottom pattern pieces. The flap still cut at 1.5″ W, but changed the direction of the layout making sure I sewed just enough strips to cover the flap pattern piece. Quilters usually use a quarter inch seam allowance. When piecing small pieces of fabric/strips, I shortened my stitch length to 1.8-2.0.
      Thank you so much!
I can’t wait to see your quilted Cleo;)

  18. Beth K says:

I like the strip piecing because I wouldn’t feel confident enough to quilt as I go. Thanks for the giveaway!
