Hello and welcome to the first official post of the new Quilt Me A Bag series! Today we kick things off with a lady who really knows how to rock her curves – the Roll With It Tote!
The Roll With It Tote is a beautifully curved tote bag, available in two sizes, that has been designed to show off your favourite fabrics while remaining practical and eye-catching at the same time.
“Wait, back the bus up! What is this Quilt Me A Bag series you speak of?” I hear you ask. If you missed last weeks post introducing the Quilt Me A Bag series, you can find the post here. The series will showcase some of my most popular patterns, as well as the upcoming Creative’s Tote recently featured in Issue #84 of Quilters Companion Magazine (you can read all about that here!), all made up in a beautifully quilted manner.
If you’re a bag maker looking to delve into the wonderful world of quilting, OR if you’re a quilter secretly lusting to make your first bag, and apply some of those fabulous quilting techniques you are oh-so-comfortable with, then this series is for YOU!
In last weeks post you will find information about our wonderful series partner – the one and only Alison Glass – as well as our amazingly creative Crystal Harrison (the maker behind all these gorgeous bags you’re going to see). Please remember to pop over to their pages (links at the end) and give them some love as this series wouldn’t be happening without their fantastic support!
The sponsor for this post is the super amazing Kylie from Voodoo Rabbit Fabric, who has generously donated a $40 AUD gift certificate to one lucky winner! Thank you so much Kylie! You can find Kylie’s shop here – make sure you go and check out all her goodies, especially her range of alternative and funky fabric!
You will find all giveaway details including T&C’s at the end of this post, as well as information on how to enter (it’s super simple!).
To create this quilty Roll With It Tote, Crystal used prints from the new Sun Print 2017 collection. She went with the Quilt As You Go (QAYG) approach, and included some straight line quilting as well.
She decided to apply QAYG to the outer pockets of the bag so began by tracing the outline of the outer pocket pattern piece onto a piece of light weight interfacing (SF101), and then placed a piece of non-fusible foam behind it.
Crystal explained that “the outer pockets are the perfect canvas to use the QAYG technique and to showcase the gorgeous Alison Glass Sun Print 2017 collection”.
Once the panel was prepared, it was time to play!
Crystal recommends making the quilted panels slightly larger than the pattern pieces to account for some inevitable shrinkage when quilting. It would be such a shame to take the time, and use treasured fabric, to make a gorgeous quilted panel, only to find it had shrunk and was then too small for the bag.
Forethought is key, and by creating a quilted panel that is slightly larger than needed, it will help ensure the quilted panels will be large enough when cutting out the pattern pieces later on.
For the main outer panels, Crystal decided to use straight line quilting to keep in line with the quilty feel of the bag, yet not detract from the gorgeous composition of the outer pockets.
She decided to quilt all of the bag – using QAYG or straight line quilting – except for the strap, which she pieced together and finished with two rows of top stitching down each side.
And here is her Roll With It Tote, all finished and looking gorgeous!

Have not yet tried quilting. Just a beginner in bag making but love the look of quilted bags
Great looking bag!!
I’m a bag maker but I’ve never quilted, but I love the way the quilting adds texture to the bag. I would really like to try it one day, but am intimidated by choosing the colours and patterns to piece together. I guess you can’t go too far wrong when you use gorgeous Alison Glass fabric from the same collection! Will be following this series for inspiration!
I have made several bags but none quilted. Love the vibrant colors. Add to that a new skill and you can’t lose.
I love to make my own bags, it’s great to have something original that no-one else has. I enjoyed seeing Crystal’s quilted Roll With It Tote and can now envisage even more originality and creativity in my future bags. Thank you for showing us something gorgeous and vibrant.
I have been quilting for 15 years and bag making for 9 months. Now the perfect match up, so excited to try this ?Thx
This bag is beautiful! Crystal did an amazing job ..now I want to quilt a bag, try this pattern, and buy more Alison Glass fabric (I’m obsessed with the designs and color combinations she uses!)
Hmmm, I have a Jelly Roll of this very fabric, sew pretty! Thank You!
So excited about this series! I’ve been making bags and quilting a bit, and have been wanting to combine the two. And here you are! Perfect timing, I’d say. Can’t wait to pull together enough cool fabric s to do this. Thanks, Ladies.
I have never quilted a bag before – but will def do one now!
This is my favorite kind of bag! I want to try this pattern!
Pretty colors and unique ideas. Didn’t ever see size or measurements??
love making bags, just getting started.
Hi Connie, measurements for the Roll With It Tote can be found on the product listing here. Crystal has not provided cut sizes for the quilting pieces as it’s personal preference as to how big or small you would like them. 🙂
Loving this bag. I really enjoy making bags and would be fun to make this one. survivor972002@midco.net
I love it! My life revolves around stitching (and when I can do it next). Quilting is a huge passion and bag making a very close second. I have made one QAYG bag but desperately need another one soon. The RWI Tote and QAYG is a perfect match and a version will soon be on my shoulder – hopefully for mother’s day.
Love Crystal’s qayg bag. It has certainly inspired me to make something similar. How did Crystal finish her seams inside please?
Hi Susan & thank you so much! The interior is fully lined with a zipper pocket
I have been making my own bags for since last year. Haven’t tried quilting yet. But was always keen to try new things. Sure would like to try. The bag looks gorgeous. And the Alison Glass fabric is simply amazing. Thanx for sharing.
Love the look! This is definitely going on my list to make and make soon!
Crystal’s QAYG is beautiful. What a fun tote!

Love the bag, great combo of patterns and color! Really would like to give this a go!
Yes, I’d like to make this bag. For some reason gafs scare me! I do like this one.
I really like t he idea of quilting the piece first then using it for parts. I am going to give yhis bag a try soon!
I LOVE QAYG & Crystal’s Roll With It Tote!!! I have made several QAYG bags & am looking forward to creating one with Alison Glass fabric!
Thank you, Linda!!!
As a long time quilter and a recent bag devotee, this is right up my alley. And I have been promising to make myself a new bag. Yippee
I’ve made a bag with QAYG panels, but not quilted the panels themselves (it was strip pieced). I love bags for the instant gratification and practical use they provide.
It’s Stunning. I have this pattern and it’s on my to do list for sure – The quilting looks great!
I have never quilted but I am very interested in it. I love the pop of color on this tote. I have only sewn 3 bags: 2 clutches and 1 cross-body so I am quite a novice. I love the pictures and hope to use this technique one day.
I purchased this pattern a little while ago with certain fabrics in mind but seeing this version has just opened up a whole new direction to try. Great colours, a girl after my own heart. Thanks.
CONGRATULATIONS Pauline – you have won the $40 Voodoo Rabbit Fabric gift certificate!!! Please check your inbox for an email from Andrie Designs! 🙂
Yay Pauline!!! Congratulations!!!
Love the bag. Have been so tempted to buy the pattern, now I really want to try this.
Gorgeous bag! I just “got” the name change….sheesh I’m super slow! LOL
I love this series and hope to be a part of it!!!
I have never used Allison Glass fabric…what a great way to get “introduced”!!! WOWZERS!
Love quilted bags, I quilted the flap on your messenger bag pattern using the same concept of quilting first and then cutting the side needed. Excited to try this pattern.
Gorgeous!! Can’t wait to try this technique!
I love Crystal’s Roll With It Tote! I quilt and make bags but have never combined the 2. Looks like I need to change that and having made this bag before, i know what a great pattern it is and I would love to try it again with some QAYG happening on it.
Thank you Viv!! Get your QAYG on & please share when you do 🙂
Love this bag and Crystal did a superb job of it. I made my second bag 3 weeks ago and it was a quilt as you go messenger bag and those who have seen it all love it. Going to get this tote pattern because it is a lovely shape.
Wow! What a beautiful bag. I would love a bag like that’. Love the brite collars.
Love the quilt as you go method that sure makes it beautiful easier to manipulate the fabric to ensure a nice flat quilting design! Beautiful fabrics and bag.
I love this bag, how wonderful are the colours, the quilting makes the whole bag pop too. I’m looking forward to the rest of this series.
Beautiful bag, the vibrant colors are complimented by the grey which I think makes it look sophisticated. Definitely a bag Iwill do and the “process” photos are really clear.
I have this pattern and have wanted to try it. These fabrics are so bright and colorful and make the bag pop! I think i will have to give it a try.
I love this bag and think it is gorgeous. I would love to try and make my own one day. The fabrics used are gorgeous.
Love this! So inspiring!
Would love to try this out, never quilted before. Going to get a jelly roll at month end and try it out.
I love this purse/bag! I am seriously considering buying this pattern for a new Spring bag!
Beautiful bag! I wanna try that
Love this bag! I am a quilter who longs to be a bag maker! Thanks for the chance to win.
I love this bag! I will be trying it out for sure!!
Yes I want to make this bag, I love the QAYG and those happy colors on the pocket with navy, gorgeous. What a great way to practice my quilting. The quilting adds so much to the bag.
I LOVE the bright colours.
I hadn’t though about doing a panel on a bigger bag and I love the idea!
This is brilliant. I have tried QAYG on smaller projects with it as the whole bag on say a wash bag, but this is stunning.
Love the colors and bag design. The quilt as you go and straight line quilting is somewhat intimidating!!
Crystal’s quilted Roll With It Tote is fabulous! Loving the use of the bright, happy colors of the Sun Prints combined with the dark (looks like black?) fabric. I have used the QAYG method before, but never on a bag. That is now on my list to do.
Thank you, Jan!
Haven’t tried a quilted bag yet, but this looks like just the one to give it a try. Love the both the colours and the design.
This tote is so. Eautiful! I would love to try it.

I love the contrast of the dark and bright fabrics. I’ve ‘kinda’ used this technique in making a patchwork dress and feel inspired to try it on a bag now!
Fabulous bag, I love how the quilting add texture. I’m going to give it a go over the weekend as long as my family don’t need to much feeding 😉
Crystal did an amazing job on that tote! I have made patchwork and quilted wristlet in the last but never a tote. Am loving this pattern!
I’m definitely going to give this a go. A great way to use up the scraps of my Ex Libris panels! I love the instructions- makes it seem not so complicated!
The colours make this bag so happy! It looks amazing. Have to go buy the magazine now. 🙂
What an impact the colours and quilting make!!! Would love to have a go at this!
I’ve been looking for a handbag for myself. I think this is gonna be the one. Wonderful collaboration ladies!
Hello,
I guess you could call me a “bag lady”, at least thats what my children think I am. I have made one bag and I’m very proud to say that it came out better than I had expected. Since I became familiar with Instagram I have been inspired by so many talented people, “Andrie Designs” just to name one.
Everything you “Andrie Designs” post is such yummy eye candy. It makes me appreciate my sense of sight more and more.
Some time in my near future I’d like to challenge myself in making another bag. I’m thinking the Cross Body Pouch would be a great one for starters.
Thank you for sharing all your beautiful work!
This is sew much fun! I have the pattern and following these posts. Thanks!
Have been collecting tote bag patterns for ages and just love the shape and textures of this bag.The simplicity of the lines makes it pop

I have quilted a lot of bags. My own pattern. But this takes it to a new level. Eager to get started!
I have never tried a QAYG bag. The bag looks beautiful. Will definitely try one.
This is intriguing!
I am so looking forward to getting my sewing machine and fabrics out and I’m planning to catch up and sew once my machine issues are sorted and when possible. Thank you so much for these fabulous tutorials for such beautiful classy elegant and designer look bags! Greetings from the UK Karen x
I have only done a few simple tote bags without quilting so this would be a jump for me but looks fun. I love the Alison Glass colors!
This bag is a great design and it is on my Bucket List to make and if I could use Alison Glass fabrics, that would make it so much better. Love the colours and designs of bag and fabrics.
