Hi there! Lovely to have you join me and welcome to Day Six of the Hang About Toiletry Bag Sew Along! We are working our way through the Hang About Toiletry Bag pattern (found here) and come to the first of a two part grand finale – putting it all together!!!
Today we are working through steps 52 – 59 which is the first part of assembling your bag (steps 29-31 of the Andrie Designs-branded version). I hope you’ve warmed up those arm muscles of yours! 😀
Before you get started though – a wee tip for your flap… To make it just that little bit easier to navigate the bulk around your machine without having to deal with the d-ring loops and swivel hook/d-ring as well, I like to first clip the swivel hook to one of the longer d-ring loop sides, and then tuck it all into the flap pocket and secure with a safety pin, pinning the d-ring loop to the zipper tape, not the pocket pieces themselves.
Once you have your back panel attached in place, feel free to take a minute to stand back and admire your handy work… Eek! It’s looking soooo good!!!
When trimming your seam allowances down, I like to trim twice – the first time all the way around looking from one side of the seam. For the second trim, I turn the seam over and trim from that new side or perspective as well. For seams like this that can be a little bulky in places, I find this technique helps to eliminate bulk in a nice and uniform manner.
Attaching the back panel is harder than attaching the front panel – I like to get the harder part over and done with and then find attaching the front panel a breeze!
And before you know it, you’re done! Congratulations! You have assembled the outer of your bag!
We are almost done!!! For the last day in this little sew along we will be finishing the assembly of your toiletry bag, including adding another pattern hack (YES!!!) so see you then! Remember if you have any questions whatsoever, please feel free to comment below or ask in my patterns group on Facebook.
Happy sewing! Lisa 🙂
