With more creativity in her little finger than most of us dream of, the work of today’s Meet the Maker guest is nothing short of amazing. Beautiful photos and gorgeous fabrics are just the tip of the talent iceberg. She also has a crazy love of zippers that any self-respecting bag maker will relate to. A hearty welcome to the wonderful Aimee, of The Little Bird Designs.

Please tell us a little about yourself.

I’m a fabric hoarding mom with a zipper obsession! Not only do I run an online business selling bags and accessory but I blog about it and all things handmade too! I love sharing the creative world. I also teach a number of bag/wallet classes, and even have one of Lisa’s patterns coming up soon – the Stand Up & Tote Notice! Aside from that, I am an Esthetician as well as an Educator for Artistic Nail design. I pretty much don’t sit still 😉

I have a handsome little man who just turned 9 and is just as creative as me. We’re not the only creative ones in the house either. My husband is beautiful painter and also has the ability to play 5 different instruments! It’s never a dull moment in our house <3

How long have you been making bags and how did you get started?

I started making bags when my son was little. He nursed, so carrying around a huge diaper bag wasn’t necessary. To say my style of bags/ability has changed over the years would be an understatement! Once I started, it quickly became an obsession and I have now I have been successfully sewing as a business for about 5 years!

What are you working on right now?

Right now I am working on a couple Emmaline Bag patterns as well as some Stand Up Clutches for a new summer collection I am launching next month! I’m also playing with some paper piecing on bags because I have recently become obsessed with quilting 😀

What’s your favourite part of making bags?

I love the mixing of patterns and fabrics. Quite often I go outside of the box and put things together that most people won’t! Oh and ZIPPERS I seriously love me some zippers. In the bag, on the bag, or ever on their own, just zippers for everything!

And your least favourite…?

Curves. I am getting better every time I sew them but curves and circles are my nemesis!

What is one tip you would offer someone new to making bags?

Take your time and don’t be afraid to try something new. I always like to start with a challenge than when you make something easy, it feels like much more of an accomplishment!

Do you have a favourite tool or notion that is an absolute life saver when it comes to making bags?

I cannot live without my non stick foot or my wonder clips! They make sewing sticking vinyl so much easier! Plus with wonder clips, I am finding I can get things done fast which means more bags for me!

Thank you, Aimee, for taking the time to share your story with us. I can’t wait to see more of your beautiful creations. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I desperately need to try some of that paper piecing I saw above. Who’s with me?
