After being asked ever-so-nicely by my parents for a messenger bag for Christmas last year that was in between the small and large sizes of our existing Good-To-Go Messenger Bag pattern, I got on with drafting a medium size which turned out to be perfect and exactly what they were hoping for (with some added zipper pockets as well!)!

I figured it only fitting to share the pattern pieces as an add on to the full pattern, to give another option in one of our most popular patterns, so here they are!

Not familiar with the Good-To-Go Messenger Bag pattern? Not to worry! You can find it here!

Finished size of a medium Good-To-Go Messenger Bag:

  • Width – 10″ (25cm)
  • Height – 9″ (23cm)
  • Depth – 3 1/4″ (8.3cm)

What you will need:

  • Good-To-Go Messenger Bag updated pattern (containing diagrams rather than photos and now includes instructions for an adjustable cross body strap), along with the bonus medium sized pattern pieces which you can find here.
  • All fabric and notions as per the original pattern.
  • An additional 3/4″ (19mm) magnetic snap.

To make a medium sized messenger bag, follow the updated pattern (containing diagrams rather than photos), using these details as follows:

Preparing Your Panels – Step 4:

  • Cut out corners at 1 5/8″ (4.2cm).

Preparing Your Panels – Step 6:

  • NOTE: It is best practice to check the alignment of the snaps (male to corresponding female) prior to installing them on your panels.
  • Install the female half of each magnetic snap 5″ (13cm) UP from the bottom edge and 3 5/8″ (9.2cm) IN from each outer edge on the front body outer panel.
  • Install the male half of each magnetic snap 1 1/2″ (3.8cm) UP from the bottom, curved edge and 2 1/2″ (6.5cm) IN from each outer edge on the flap lining panel.

Creating Your Slip Pocket – Step 12:

  • Follow the same measurements as for the large size.

Assembling Your Bag – Step 14:

  • Follow the same size turn through gap as for the large size.

To add two zipper pockets, you will also need:

  • 2 x 10″ (25cm) dress zippers.
  • Fabric and interfacing panels for each pocket (two panels per pocket) – 10″ x 7″ (25cm x 18cm).

Follow our free tutorial on YouTube if you are unsure how to create zipper pockets. You can find the tutorial here

Zipper pocket placement:

  • For the inner pocket, place the pocket panel 1″ (2.5cm) down from the top, raw edge of the back lining panel.
  • For the outer pocket, place the pocket panel 2″ (5cm) down from the top, raw edge of the front outer panel.
