Little Bird is back to bring you another Meet the Maker feature! Today I’m introducing you to a maker who uses colourful fabrics in creative ways for every bag she makes. Say hello to Cheryl from Simply Cherabea!

Tell us a little about yourself.

Hello, My name is Cheryl Beason. I’ve been married to my best friend for almost 6 years. He’s my biggest fan! I stay at home and do what I love to do, bag making. I’m 51 years young, mother of four sons (two are stepsons) and I have five beautiful grand kids, which includes a set of twins! My family is my life, my inspiration!!!

How long have you been making bags and how did you get started?

I started bag making around two years ago after my mom passed away. I was grieving so bad for her and I had tons of her boxes and totes in my basement. I knew it was lots of sewing things but not knowing what all there was. I found out I had inherited all of her sewing machines, notions and tons of fabric. It was a huge treasure!! Apparently, I also have her gift of sewing! It was like a door opened, and it keeps on opening new skills for me!

What are you working on right now?

Right now I’m working on several orders for handbags and wallets. I’m also very active in testing new patterns for designers!!

What’s your favourite part of making bags?

I would have to say my favourite part of bag making is when I visualise my favourite fabrics into the bag itself. I can see it taking shape into the vision as I sew it all together!

And your least favourite…?

My least favourite part is cutting everything out! I just want to start sewing, but I know this is part of the process.

What is one tip you would offer someone new to making bags?

Just go for it!!! If you want to make bags, then make bags!!! Don’t give up, errors happen! Repair it, fix it, and keep going!

What has been your proudest creative make or moment so far?

I would have to say my proudest moment was when I completed my first handbag from a pattern! It was the greatest feeling in the world when I sat and looked at it! I kept saying “I can’t believe I made that!”!!!
