The story behind this pattern is one that is very close to my heart… My wonderful Dad – someone who never asks me for anything – asked me to design him a bag. Not just any bag, he wanted something small and compact, that he could wear around his waist while working in the bush (they live rural) or going on bush walks. He asked that it be split in two, so he could have his water bottle on one side (and have the bag open so the water bottle was easily accessible – this is most important when you’re thirsty and have gloved hands!), and his phone, a snack and keys securely stored on the other side of the bag.
After much discussion, we arrived at the Little Freehand Pack. Throughout consultation with my testers, we all felt it would be an even better pattern if it included downsized straps in a variety of sizes so children and teens could also benefit from this pattern. It really is a pattern to suit almost everyone – enjoy!

Hi, I love how this bag is suitable for adults as well. But I’m wondering if the size of the bag is adjustable. I’m planning on making a crossbody for hubby who rides his motorbike often and is in need of a crossbody but I’d like it bigger. Is this possible? Thanks!
Hi Yvy! Thanks for your question and yes, you could definitely try enlarging the pattern slightly, you would just have to tweak the size of the gusset so it still fitted well. As an alternative, my husband also rides a road bike and uses his large sized Good-to-Go Messenger Bag that I made him a few years ago. I changed the strap to be adjustable, and he wears it cross body and really likes it for it’s size and comfort when riding. Hope that helps! 🙂
